Larkhall Estate: Urban Driftwood

In May 2011, an aggressive predatory fungus ate through the roots of a gigantic London Plane tree on Lambeth's Larkhall Estate. One night the wind blew stronger than usual and the tree came crashing down. Some windows were smashed, the fence destroyed and half a chimney block was taken out, but by some miracle nobody was hurt. Tree surgeons came and dismantled the fallen crown and took it away, but the stump remained. 7m long and nearly 2m high on its side, the beached whale of stump soon attracted children from the estate. All it needed then was a little bit of monkey magic...

Huge thanks to Caroline Fraser at Lambeth Living and all the residents of Larkhall Estate for giving us the opportunity to sprinkle a little monkey dust over this big old tree stump.
